Josh Weiss, Senior Fellow, Harvard Negotiation Project & Director, M.S. Leadership and Negotiation at Bay
Path University was with us again last week and gave us all a master class in negotiation.
Dr. Weiss gave us the tools to be good negotiators. We learned to overcome and re-frame the common barriers to engaging in negotiation: Fear of conflict, Fear of the employer's power, and Fear of negotiating poorly.
Viewing negotiation as a critical skill in the workplace, just like fluency in Excel, or presenting to senior leaders, will help your career. Building the relationships that make it work are just as important as the outcome.
Remember only 25% of people negotiate. We all NEED to be in that 25%, especially as women, in order to overcome any gender pay gap that may be present, or to work out the flexibility, or other objectives you have, to be successful and happy with your work choices.
Now negotiation should be in your wheelhouse, prepare for it and we look forward to you OWNING IT!
Dr. Weiss has spoken and published on leadership, negotiation, mediation, and systemic approaches to dealing with conflict. Dr. Weiss’ newest book, is entitled The Book of Real-World Negotiations: Successful Strategies from Business, Government, and Daily Life. The book shines a light on real world negotiation examples and cases, rather than discussing hypothetical scenarios. It reveals what is possible through preparation, persistence, creativity, and taking a strategic approach to your negotiations.
